The fourth Analytical Instrument Training program was held from 01st to 10th of November 2016 for the Technical Staff of University of Ruhuna. The programwas inaugurated by the Director Prof. Parakrama Karunaratne and he stressed the importance of improving of the quality of the research work in his speech in the inaugural session.
All together twenty three participants from faculties of Engineering, Medicine, Science and Agriculture took part in this program.
The previously held three training programs were conducted for the technical staff of Rajarata University, Coconut Research Institute and for the Open University of Sri Lanka.
The National Institute of Fundamental Studies ( NIFS ), as one of the leading research organizations in the country has identified the need of a competent staff to handle all the Analytical instruments in Universities and Research organizations in the county. Therefore, we are very much interested in sharing our experience and knowledge with the other institutes in this field of interest. This was thepreliminary idea of organizing and conducting Analytical Instrument training programs of this caliber.
We wanted to deviate from conventional way of conducting training programs and focused more towards in interaction with all the participants and also wanted be multi-disciplinary as a presently demanding requirement. Therefore, we designed our coursework to cover most of the important fields like Spectroscopy, chromatography, microscopes, computer and field sampling techniques.
We were able to discuss most of the important techniques behind important Analytical instruments such as GC, GCMS, LC, UV-VIS, FTIR, AAS, handling of various microscope types including electron microscope, Computers /network systems, on site sampling techniques, Management of a research laboratory and a chemical store and ancillary instruments like pH meter, Centrifuge, Microwave digestion system and Analytical balances.
All the participants received a comprehensive theory and practical training on the above aspects during this period of ten days in which a course evaluation and discussions were held on the final day of the program. The responses from all the participants were very encouraging and we were touched by their unspoiled response for our efforts and dedication to make this program a success and for making their time and money spent on this program worthwhile.
A formal lunch was held to mark the closing of the Training program and was participated by all well wishes. The closing ceremony and distribution of certificates were held under the patronage of the Acting Director Prof. Lalith Jayasinghe.
