National Institute of Fundamental Studies – Kandy conducted a two-day training workshop for the Science teachers of the Hanguranketha Educational Zone on 14th and 15th June 2017 at the NIFS premises on Research methodology. This was organized on the request of the Zonal Director of Education- Hanguranketha.
Main objective of this training workshop is to uplift the Scientific Research Skills among the Science teachers of the Hanguranketha Educational Zone. Thereby to uplift the Scientific skills among the School children. 35 teachers participated in this training workshop. Training workshop consisted of a series of Lectures, Lab visits and a Practical session.
On the first day Professor S.H.P.P. Karunaratne (Director-NIFS) delivered a lecture on “Introduction to Scientific Method”. Followed by lectures on “How to use Scientific Method in the subject area of Physics” by Professor Lakshman Dissanayake (Research Professor-NIFS) and “Practical aspects of using scientific method in a research project on air born microbes” by Dr. Dhammika Magana Arachchi (Research Fellow-NIFS).
On the second day Ms. Cheka Kehelpannala (Research Assistant-NIFS) delivered a lecture on “How to use Scientific Method in the subject area of Chemistry” followed by a lecture on “How to use Scientific Method on biological science” by Professor Gamini Seneviratne (Research Professor-NIFS) and Dr. Kumari Tilakaratne (Head, Science Education and Dissemination Unit of the NIFS) delivered a lecture on “Ethics to follow when using the Scientific Method”. After the brainstorming sessions, group activity was carried out to develop school research projects.
