The National Institute of Fundamental Studies is the only Institute of its kind, established by an Act of Parliament. Some of its aims and objectives, amongst others, are to initiate, promote and conduct research and original investigation into fundamental studies in general, with particular emphasis on mathematics, physical and chemical sciences, life sciences, social sciences and philosophy, taken in the broadest sense.

Post of Director

The Institute invites applications from Sri Lankan citizens for the Post of Director from eminent scientists, with a proven track record in basic scientific research in any of the above disciplines and is currently active in such Research and Development activities. The Director will function as the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute and therefore needs to have good interpersonal skills coupled with adequate administrative ability.

Each applicant is expected to have a

  1. First Degree preferably with a First Class or an Upper Second Class, and
  2. A Postgraduate Degree preferably a PhD from a recognized University

There is no age limit for appointment as Director but the applicant should provide substantial evidence of continuing high-caliber research and that he is physically and mentally fit to hold the position.

In addition to the implementation of the relevant provisions of the Act of the Parliament, the Director is expected to provide leadership to a team of active researchers. In the broadest sense, as applicable to the NIFS, fundamental research in science and technology may be understood to be such as what maintains a reasonable balance between curiosity driven research and what is generally accepted as being applicable to the understanding of local problems.

The appointment will be on contract for a period of three years.

If the selected candidate is also appointed to function concurrently as a Research Professor/ Senior Research Professor he /she will be placed on the UGC Salary Scale of UAC 5 (II) / UAC 5 (I) respectively with other allowances attached (Marking Scheme is available on the NIFS website – www.nifs.ac.lk). He/ she will also be entitled to fuel allowance, entertainment allowance and the Director’s allowance. If he/she is not appointed as a Research Professor/ Senior Research Professor, the salary and allowances will be determined by the Board of Governors.

Successful applicants will contribute 10% of their remuneration to the E.P.F., while the Institute’s contribution will be 15% to E.P.F. and 3% to E.T.F.
