Prof. Ruvini Liyanage is an Associate Research Professor and Head of the Nutritional Biochemistry Research Programme at the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS). Her academic and research career has focused primarily on nutritional biochemistry, functional foods, and public health nutrition. Over the past two decades, she has contributed to multidisciplinary research initiatives addressing nutrition-related health challenges in Sri Lanka and internationally. Her work integrates laboratory-based nutritional biochemistry with community-based nutrition research.

She obtained her bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, and subsequently earned her MSc and PhD degrees in Nutritional Biochemistry from Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, where she conducted research on the hypocholesterolemic effects of dietary proteins and peptides.

Currently, she leads several research activities at NIFS while also contributing to postgraduate education, student supervision, research administration, and editorial work. Her research output includes more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, with a Google Scholar h-index of 24 and over 2,400 citations. She has supervised numerous postgraduate and undergraduate students and continues to contribute actively to national scientific development through collaborative research, innovation, and mentorship.

Research Interests

Prof.Liyanage’s research interests lie at the intersection of nutritional biochemistry, functional foods, and public health nutrition, with a focus on understanding the complex relationships between diet, nutrition, and human health. She is particularly interested in generating scientific evidence that can contribute to the prevention and management of nutrition-related health challenges through multidisciplinary and translational research approaches.
