The NIFS is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year . In commemoration of this milestone, NIFS organized a celebratory event on 28th July, 2021, held at the Cyril Ponnamperuma Auditorium of the NIFS, and as an online event. The Honorable State minister of Skills Development, Vocational Education, Research and Innovation, Dr. Seetha Arambepola, graced the occasion as the chief guest. The keynote speech was given by the renowned scientist Vidya jothi Professor Prasad Katulanda on ‘Application of diabetes and NCD research to Sri Lankan population’.
Established in 1981 by an Act of parliament, the NIFS is the only institute in Sri Lanka dedicated to fundamental research. Over the last 40 years, the NIFS has achieved many milestones in research and academia. Currently, the NIFS is conducting over 16 research projects under 6 research departments. The NIFS is continuing to improve in both physical and human resources, and as a result, we can expect great outcomes in the future as well. The NIFS has been ranked 3rd among Sri Lankan universities based on research outcome, and NIFS scientists are listed top among Sri Lankan peers. With these statistics, and a potential-filled younger generation engaging in research at the institute, the NIFS is sure to dominate the research sector of Sri Lanka, and will look forward to establishing itself in the international setting as well.
