Background

Dr. Himesh Dilruwan Jayasinghe is a dedicated and highly skilled researcher currently serving as a Research Fellow at the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS). With a deep passion for plant taxonomy, ecology and conservation on both flora and fauna, Dr. Jayasinghe's academic background includes a Ph.D. in Plant Molecular Systematics from the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo in 2022. His PhD research was conducted as a research assistant at NIFS, where his thesis titled ‘Taxonomy and molecular phylogeny of Syzygium species of family Myrtaceae in Sri Lanka: Implications for conservation and sustainable exploitation’.

Before pursuing his Ph.D., Dr. Jayasinghe completed a BSc in Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, equipping him with a strong foundation in Civil engineering, specialized in ‘Water Engineering and Infrastructure’ in 2007. He served as an Irrigation Engineer for five years in Irrigation Department and engaged in large-scale construction projects such as Weheragala reservoir.

Dr. Jayasinghe has published several books on Sri Lankan butterflies and plants and currently serving as a member of Butterfly expert committee and Higher plants expert committee for National Red listing process. He is actively volunteering in several environmental organizations, while being the founder of Nature Team – University of Moratuwa and Butterfly Conservation Society of Sri Lanka.

His current interest is mainly focusing on taxonomy of angiosperms of Sri Lanka.
