Three Minute Thesis(3MT) Competition 2023
The Finals of the Three Minute Thesis(3MT) Competition 2023 organized by the Young Scientists Association (YSA) of the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) Kandy was held on the 20th of June 2023 at the Cyril Ponnamperuma Auditorium of the NIFS. This competition was organized by the YSA for the fourth consecutive year, creating a platform for the undergraduate and graduate students at universities of Sri Lanka to showcase their research in a simple but informative manner to a non-specialist audience in under three minutes. This is the first time YSA upgraded the completion to the National level.
The preliminary round of the competition was held on 11th June 2023, from 35 competitors, 10 candidates were selected for the finals. The panel of judges of the competition consisted of Eng. Noorul Munawwara is a chartered Engineer by profession and retired Additional General Manager of Ceylon Electricity Board; Mr. Thammitage the General Manager at ESOFT Metro Campus Kandy Branch as well as a lecturer in both IR and Management disciplines. Dr. Thilini Perera is a Lecturer attached to the Department of Plant Sciences, Faculty of Science,University of Colombo.
Ms. Sumana Saseevan emerged as the winner with her presentation “Identification of urinary biomarkers for diabetic and hypertensive chronic kidney disease” followed by Mr. Sahitha Karapitiya as 1st runner up and Ms. Venuja Somasundaraiyer as 2nd runner-up. Mr. Sahitha Karapitiya also won the People’s choice award, receiving the highest votes from the audience present. This competition gave an opportunity for the budding scientists at Sri Lanka to develop their presentation skills and to communicate science in a language appropriate to a non-scientific audience, which would be immensely beneficial in their future careers.
