40th Anniversary Commemoration Webinar Series - Solar Energy for sustainable development, reduce poverty and mitigate damaging effects of climate change
Coinciding with the 40th-anniversary commemoration the 5th webinar was held on 15th December 2021 at the Prof. Cyril Ponnamperuma Auditorium, as a hybrid event.
I.M. Dharmadasa is a Professor of Applied Physics and leads the Electronic Materials and Solar Energy (solar cells and other Semiconductor Devices) Group at Sheffield Hallam University, UK, and also Adjunct Professor at NIFS, delivered his lecture on “Solar Energy for sustainable development, reduce poverty and mitigate damaging effects of climate change”.
In his lecture, he pointed out the importance of empowering rural communities by introducing clean energy technologies and guiding them to escape from poverty traps and also improve water & food security in deprived communities, while uplifting their living standards. Finally, he stressed on the importance of finding solutions to climate change, improving the environment, and reducing the burning of fossil fuel using novel technologies from the laboratory to society through sustainable development pathways.
